Pregnancy and Chiropractic
Chiropractic care and pregnancy…a natural partnership!
More and more women find chiropractic care not only as a relief for back pain due to hormonal and postural changes during pregnancy but for other benefits for their health and wellbeing, for the development of the baby, and for the ease of delivery!
During pregnancy, there are many changes that affect the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems. Those hormonal and physiological changes prepare the environment for the development and then delivery of the baby.
There are also many changes that can affect the mother’s spine and joints during pregnancy. The protruding abdomen increases that low back curve creating pressure on the tissues and joints in the back, potentially creating pinched and irritated nerves and muscular stress.
Also, there are significant pelvic changes that develop during pregnancy to widen the pelvis and prepare for delivery. And because of altered weight bearing, there are significant postural changes experienced by the mother.
When the pelvis is misaligned it may affect the developing baby by creating restriction. It also may make it more difficult for the baby to get in alignment for delivery. All of this can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural and non-invasion delivery.
We all know that the nervous system is the master communication system in the body and keeping the spine aligned helps the body work more effectively.
Potential benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy are many and varied depending on the mother and the conditions of her general health and the progress of the pregnancy.
Chiropractic Care can help to:
- Maintain a healthier pregnancy
- Reduce the time of labor and delivery
- Relieve back or neck pain and discomfort
- Prepare the musculoskeletal system for an easier delivery.
Currently the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) recommends that pregnant women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to ensure pelvic balance and stability, optimize room for the developing baby, and facilitate a more effective and safe delivery.
Pregnant woman should seek care that contributes to their overall health and wellness and to the health and safety of their growing and developing baby.
